With the exception of the Pelagic sea snake (Pelamis platurus) sea snakes live in coastal waters of the Indo-Pacific aera. There are no sea snakes in the Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean, the Mediterranean or the Red Sea. Sometimes they enter aslo river mouths and are seen even further upstream. Two species have adapted completely to living in freshwater lakes, one in the Philippines (Hydrophis semperi) and the other on the Solomon Islands (Laticauda crockeri).
