Definition: Systemic effects that arise due to the direct action of venom/poison on red blood cells.
Signs and symptoms:
- Anaemia,
- icterus.
- Laboratory findings: haemoglobin ↓, LDH ↑, haptoglobin ↓.
Venom-induced haemolysis via the direct action of venom components on erythrocyte membranes is rare following snakebites. It has been well documented for envenoming caused by Daboia russelli pulchella.
Haemolysis has also been observed in accidents with the Portuguese-man-of-war (Physalia sp.) and the Brown recluse spider (Loxosceles sp.) as well as following multiple hymenopteran stings (→ Bees and Wasps).
